My work focuses on pulling from some of my favorite films, pop culture moments, and historical works of art. Pop culture is something that we are attached to, but also fairly removed from. I quite frequently use pop culture as a source of inspiration because of this very fact. I have some sort of connection to the subject that I’m drawing, but I can also distance myself and apply my own experiences, emotions, and narrative. In this collection of my work I use stills from films/music videos such as: Devades, The Godfather, Om Shanti Om, The subway, The Way, etc. Along with the pictures of pop icons including: (Billie Ellish, Ariana Grande, Chappell Roan, etc.), and historical paintings such as Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan.

My inspiration was ignited by my love of pop culture and art history. In fact there are various methodologies to art history. One that has always stuck out to me was the methodology of “Affect and Emotion.” This method focuses on the importance of the emotional connection that an artwork has on the viewer. How can we simply look at a piece of art and feel a stir of emotion? I find myself moved by most artistic creations whether it is good, bad, or uncomfortable emotions. I used to think that being emotional was something to be ashamed of. As I grow older I realize that the ability to feel your emotions is empowering, and allows one to connect deeper with the world around them. Through art, I have been able to understand that emotions are valuable, and can serve as nonverbal communication. Not only is this body of work meant to tackle emotional insecurities, but also my own personal artistic/visual insecurities. I made sure to embrace what makes my art, specifically mine. My work remains a mix between 2 and 3 dimensional perspective, for it neither looks like flat lines nor realistically rendered. This has always been something that I have always tried to fight and or overcome because of my unrealistic approach to producing something artistically realistic. Instead I try to embrace my insecurities and accept them as my own strengths.

I would consider myself an empath, and as one, I sat down and poured my emotions into these separate pieces, and now call upon the viewer to actually face the emotions put in front of them. Through pencils, charcoal, and acrylics the emotions of happiness, love, longing, regret, and sadness will be portrayed. Happiness and sadness, umbrella terms for deeper emotions, will be painted on canvas with acrylic. Love, longing, and regret, because of their complexities, will be rendered in pencil and charcoal. My work helps you travel through a sea of people of varying emotions, in a collage that isolates them from their normal surroundings, these icons are now able to interact with one another as one cohesive unit. These pieces are meant to move you through an emotional progression, and invites the viewer to follow the same trajectory of feelings as the works.
